Inquiry: Who gives a stuff about our environment?

Over the past couple of weeks, our syndicate has been learning about our environment and the role water plays in it. As a result, we have learnt about the following things;

The Water Cycle

We now know how water is naturally created through the "Water Cycle". This includes the stages of: Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation and Collection. In our seperate classes we have made explanations of this process. Here is a chart that we have studied and this awesome song that was on repeat for the past week!

The Water Treatment Process

The second part of our water study looked at the water treatment process. That is, how and where does the water from our taps come from? Through research we realised that it comes from three sources: The Hutt River, the combined flow of the Wainuiomata and Orongorongo Rivers and the Waiwhetu Aquifer.

We also learnt about how the water is cleaned. There are 5 main stages of water treatment. These are coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection and storage. These 5 stages make sure that the water we drink is clear of chemicals, bacteria and other harmful things. The first 3 stages filter the water and the fourth stage disinfects the water. After this, the water is stored in a reservoir in case we need it when the rivers are low. Here is a diagram.

This week . . .

This week we will be conducting scientific experiments to see if we can clean dirty water.  We will learn the value of testing our theories and what a hypothesis is. Here are some pictures of students in Room 14 testing their theories about cleaning dirty water.
