PowhiriThis week we welcomed new students, whanau and Donna Holmes ( the new junior syndicate teacher) to SFDS. Our Kapa Haka girls, Mrs Grant and Whaea Robin led the powhiri with a strong karanga. Matua Tala and Mr Wratt took on the whaikorero (speaker) role for the school and our visitors. This was a great start to our week as it gave us the opportunity to use Te Reo Maori in an authentic context.
Throughout the week we have been learning different things about Te Ao Maori (The world of Maori) and how we can use Te Reo Maori in class. We are learning the song "Whakataka te hau" as a syndicate and will be performing it on Friday afternoon. Matua Tala taught us about singing and how to warm up and sing from the diaphragm. Miss Kearns has been teaching us about Maori art and Mr Apperley has been connecting Maori myths and legends with dance.
Here is a short clip that Matua showed his class about the hongi and the song whakataka te hau.
